🪴Your Background Is Telling The Wrong Story!
A messy room isn't authentic. Here's how to make your setup work for your content.
👀 This is something that often gets overlooked:
🏠 your background
When we're planning a UGC video, we usually focus on the script, the product, the lighting, the final edit.
But what about everything happening behind you?
The truth is, viewers notice your background far more than you think. It helps tell the story of the product, creates context, and can instantly make content feel more premium and intentional.
The good news? You don't need a Pinterest-perfect home or a dedicated content studio. You just need to be a little more strategic.
Let's break it down 👇
🏠 1. Make Your Background Match The Product
One of the easiest ways to make your content feel more natural is to film the product where people would genuinely use it (their “natural habitat”).
Think about it:
🧴 Skincare in a bathroom or vanity area
💊 Supplements in a kitchen
💻 Productivity tools at a desk setup
☕ Coffee products in a kitchen or breakfast setting / living room
When the environment makes sense, the content immediately feels more believable and easier to connect with.
⚠️ One thing to watch out for:
Bathrooms and kitchens can create a lot of echo or buzzing background noise.
Hard surfaces like tiles, mirrors and countertops bounce sound around the room, making talking-head videos sound hollow or distant.
✅ Easy fixes:
Move slightly further from tiled walls
Add a towel, bath mat or soft furnishings nearby
Record voiceovers separately if needed / use external mic with built-in background noise cancellation
Do a quick audio test before filming the entire video
🧹 2. Clutter Doesn't Feel Authentic - It Feels Distracting
There's a common misconception in UGC that "authentic" means showing everything exactly as it is. Not quite.
Authentic doesn't mean messy. Authentic means believable. The problem with clutter is that it pulls attention away from the story you're trying to tell.
We've all done it:
📦 Delivery boxes in the corner
🧺 Laundry on a chair
🥤 Random bottles on the counter
📱 Phone chargers and cables everywhere
The viewer may not consciously register these things, but they create visual noise.
✅ Before filming, ask:
"If someone watched this with the sound off, where would their eye go first?"
If the answer isn't:
👉 you
👉 the product
👉 the action
Five minutes of decluttering can make a video feel dramatically more polished. And ALWAYS remember to do a test shot, especially before talking-to-head sections!
🎨 3. Add Personality Without Adding Distraction
Sometimes creators hear "declutter" and remove absolutely everything. The result? A background that feels cold, and a bit flat. Instead, think about adding a few simple touches that create warmth and personality.
For example:
🌿 A plant
🕯️ A candle
📚 A small stack of books
💄 A makeup bag
🌸 Fresh flowers
🧺 Neatly folded towel for beauty content
These little details help the space feel lived in while still keeping attention on the product. Just remember - always use things with no visible branding - you don’t want the product to compete with decorations!
A good rule of thumb:
If a prop helps tell the story, keep it.
If it steals attention, remove it.
And always double-check that there are no competitor brands, logos or product packaging visible in the background.
✨ The Big Takeaway
Your background isn't just a background. It's part of the story.
It tells viewers:
where the product fits into real life,
how it might be used,
and whether the content feels intentional.
The best UGC backgrounds aren't expensive. They're relevant.
✅ Background Check Checklist
Before filming your next video, simply check:
☐ Does my location make sense for this product?
☐ Is my audio clear with minimal echo?
☐ Have I removed distracting clutter?
☐ Are there any competitor brands visible?
☐ Have I added a few simple touches of personality?
☐ Is the product still the star of the frame?
Small changes = Big difference

✨Have a look at how brilliantly Alex creates a sophisticated background for the Olive Oil product! She shot it in the kitchen (product’s natural habitat), ensured the sound is chef’s kisses, and added small personality without adding clutter (fresh vegetables, little decorations kept in neutral colour palette).
Way to go, Alex! ✨
