❌🙅 Your B-Roll Is Probably Boring (3 Fixes That Instantly Improve It)
Let's fix the most common B-Roll issues we see all the time
What do you think of when you hear “B-Roll”?
Because this is one of the biggest things that separates an okay video from one that feels dynamic, professional, and scroll-stopping.
And the funny thing? Most B-roll mistakes aren’t about gear, lighting setups, or expensive cameras. They’re about small habits while filming.
Tiny things that are super easy to fix - once you know what to look for.
Here are 3 common B-roll mistakes we see all the time (and how to fix them instantly) 👇
🎥 1. One Long Scene Instead of Multiple POVs
A very common scenario we see:
You’re sitting at your desk working from home…
And the entire B-roll is one long shot from the same angle.
Even if it looks nice or you take actions, the viewer’s brain quickly loses interest.
❌ The mistake
Recording a 10–15 second clip from a single POV.
✅ The easy fix
Instead of one long clip, film 3-4 quick perspectives.
Example for a WFH scene:
• Wide shot at your desk
• Selfie angle from the computer POV
• Over-the-shoulder / close-up typing
• High angle / overhead desk shot
The trick? Just move your tripod.
Shift it slightly between takes and capture multiple angles of the same action.
This tiny habit instantly makes your videos feel:
more dynamic
more engaging
more intentional
Trust us - this alone can dramatically improve the video’s watch time.

☀️ 2. Shooting Against Natural Light
This one seems obvious… but we still see it often
You have a beautiful window behind you. Great view, nice daylight.
So naturally… you film facing away from the window.
But the result? The camera struggles with exposure and suddenly the clip looks:
dark
blurry
overexposed behind you
❌ The mistake
Standing with the window behind you.
✅ The fix
Turn around. Always try to face the natural light instead.
This instantly gives you:
softer lighting
clearer skin tones
sharper video quality
And if the background isn’t as pretty, simply make it work.
Tidy the space
Remove empty boxes or clutter
Move slightly to a cleaner corner
Add a plant or neutral background
Good lighting always beats a nice view - especially in harsher sun.
📐 3. Ignoring the Rule of Thirds
Your camera already has a tool that fixes framing
If you don’t have grid view enabled on your phone camera… Go turn it on now!
It’s one of the simplest ways to instantly improve framing.
Why it matters
The rule of thirds helps you naturally position the product, your face and key visual actions within the most visually pleasing areas of the frame.
That small centre rectangle? That’s your focus zone.
Try to keep:
the product
your eyes
the main action
inside that area unless there is intentional movement.
Bonus reason this matters
Maybe you work on different ratios variations:
9:16
1:1
4:5
If you frame using the grid, your content stays balanced even when cropped - which makes your footage far more versatile and easier to edit in different formats.
✨ Creator B-Roll Checklist
Before you hit record, run through this quick checklist:
☐ I’m filming 3–4 different POVs for each scene
☐ I’m facing towards natural light, not away from it
☐ My grid view is on and framing follows the rule of thirds
☐ My background is clean and intentional
☐ Each B-roll clip is short and purposeful
Small filming habits = huge improvement in your final videos.
