⛔This Isn’t UGC - And It Might Be Costing You Brand Deals!
The small changes that turn content into converting UGC.

🧠 Let’s clear up what UGC actually is (and what it isn’t)!
UGC is everywhere right now… which means a lot of content is being labelled as UGC when it actually isn’t.
And while that can be confusing (and frustrating), understanding the difference is one of the biggest things that will help you book better projects, get clearer briefs, and create content brands actually want to use.
Let’s break down 3 common mistakes about what UGC is and how to fix them 👇
🌟 🚫 1. Overly Edited “Studio” Content
Studio Content: Beautiful? Yes. UGC? Not quite.
We’re talking:
Photo-studio lighting / backdrops
Geometric / professional ad-ready props
Perfectly staged sets
Cinematic camera moves
Hyper-polished colour grading
This style looks amazing - but it often feels more like a commercial or campaign shoot, not user-generated content.
❌ Why it’s not UGC:
UGC is meant to feel real, relatable, and native to the platform. Created by a user!
When content feels too produced, viewers clock it as an ad immediately - and that reduces trust and conversion.
✅ How to make it UGC-friendly (but still premium):
✨ Use soft box or (preferably) soft natural window lighting instead of harsh studio lights
✨ Choose one elevated element (clean background, good framing, subtle colour grading)
✨ Skip artificial props - everyday objects feel more authentic (thing glasses, headbands, candles and marble trays)
✨ Avoid complex camera rigs - tripod and phone (on highest recording settings) will be just right!
Think: “Polished daily life” - not “high-budget ad”
🗣 2. One-Take Video Reviews With No Structure
Real doesn’t mean rambling.
We’ve all seen (or made) them:
A 60-second clip filmed in one take, casually talking about a product… but without direction, clarity, or focus.
❌ Why it’s not strong UGC:
Viewers lose attention quickly
Product USPs get buried, or not even mentioned
Brands can’t easily repurpose it
It feels more like a personal rant than intentional content
UGC still needs structure - even when it feels casual.
✅ How to elevate it into great UGC:
✨ Break your review into short, intentional clips
✨ Stick to 2–3 clear USPs
✨ Use b-roll to show visually what you’re saying
✨ Use your natural wording, just make sure there is structure
Formula to remember:
Hook → Problem → Solution → Benefit → Call to action
Simple, effective, and brand-friendly.
🎬 3. Thinking UGC = Influencer “Perfect Life” Content
You don’t need the ideal life to convert.
A common misconception:
UGC has to look like influencer content - perfect makeup, spotless home, aesthetic outfits, luxury lifestyle.
❌ Why this mindset holds you back:
It’s unrealistic and exhausting
It creates more room for the hated imposter syndrome - don’t fall for it!
It distances viewers instead of connecting with them
It often feels aspirational rather than relatable
And relatability is where UGC shines.
✅ What actually works instead:
✨ Your real routine
✨ Your authentic style
✨ Your lived experience
✨ Your natural way of speaking and moving
Ask yourself:
👉 Who am I?
👉 What does my everyday life actually look like?
👉 How can I show this product fitting into my reality?
UGC converts because people see themselves in it - not because it looks “perfect.”
🎯 ✨ Final Reminder:
UGC is about trust, relatability, and clarity - not perfection.
When you create content that feels human, intentional, and platform-native, brands notice. And more importantly, audiences do too.
