π¨β»οΈ These 3 Mistakes Are Causing Unnecessary Reshoots
Most reshoots are caused by small details that could have been spotted before filming. Here's how to avoid them.
No one enjoys a reshoot. You've packed everything away, exported the final video, uploaded it to Clip... and then an edit request comes through asking for new footage.
Sometimes, reshoots genuinely can't be avoided. But more often than not, they're caused by small details that are easy to miss during planning or filming.
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.
Here are three simple habits that can dramatically reduce your chances of needing to pick your camera up againπ
π 1. Build Your Concept Around The Brief - Not The Other Way Around
Your first recording shouldn't be your first time thinking about the brief.
Before you even press record, spend a few minutes planning your content around what the brand has actually asked for.
Ask yourself:
β Have I included every key USP?
β Does my concept fit the brand's tone of voice?
β Am I aiming for the correct video length and format?
β Did I send my script for brandβs approval?
β Have I noticed any requested add-ons like captions, music or additional size ratios?
One of the biggest reasons creators receive edit requests is simply because a key message or requirement was missed during planning - not because the content wasn't good.
π‘ Top tip:
If you're creating a testimonial or writing your own script, it's always worth sending it to the brand for approval before filming.
A five-minute conversation before you shoot can save hours of reshooting later. When in doubt, over-communicate. Brands will always appreciate it!
π‘ 2. Check Everything That's Happening Around You
Your background tells a story too.
Especially when filming testimonials, your surroundings become part of the overall viewing experience. Before recording, take a moment to look beyond yourself.
Is there:
π¦ An empty delivery box in the background?
π§Ί Laundry waiting to be folded?
ποΈ Shopping bags on the floor?
π·οΈ Another brand's logo accidentally visible?
Little distractions like these can instantly pull attention away from your message - and sometimes lead to unnecessary reshoots if they conflict with the brand's aesthetic.
Always record a quick test clip first. Watch it back before filming properly. You'll often notice things on camera that you completely missed in real life.
π‘ One of our favourite tricks:
Place a small mirror just behind or underneath your camera.
It allows you to quickly check your posture, hair, clothing and positioning between takes without constantly walking back to review your footage.
It's a tiny investment that can make filming feel so much smoother.
ποΈ 3. Give Yourself Options While Recording
One take is rarely enough.
Even if your first take feels great... Record it again. And then maybe one more time.
Not because your delivery is bad - but because subtle differences in energy can completely change how a line feels.
Try recording:
π One take that's warm and conversational.
β‘ One with a little more energy.
π¬ One slightly slower and more thoughtful.
Sometimes a brand may ask for a delivery that's a little softer, more upbeat or more natural. If you've already recorded a few variations, there's a good chance you'll already have exactly what you need - without setting everything up again.
The same goes for b-roll. If you're already filming a scene, capture an extra angle or two.
Future you will always thank present you.
