❓How to do a How-to?
The know-how you need to create successful product-focused videos.
📹 ✅ Have you ever watched a tutorial and thought, "I could totally do that!"?
Well, you're absolutely right. How-to videos are one of the BEST ways to create engaging UGC that brands (and audiences) love. Whether you're walking people through a product, breaking down a tricky process, or sharing how to use an app, a well-crafted how-to video can make all the difference.
But let’s be real—creating an effective tutorial or how-to video isn’t just about hitting record and hoping for the best.
So, how do you make a how-to video that’s actually scroll-stopping & converting? Let’s dive in! 🚀

Here’s some examples of scroll-stopping HOW-TO videos and what makes them shine:
EXAMPLE 1: This is an amazing example on how to create an organic-feeling how-to. Content focuses on a specific niche and showcases other ways to use the product.
EXAMPLE 2: When it comes to digital products, it’s all about the balance of visuals and audio impact. This video shows a great mix of testimonial clips and green screen video - really making the most of these features to showcase how the app makes your life easier.
EXAMPLE 3: Another great way to showcase a how-to: a mix of b-roll shots and captivating lifestyle clips to validate your audio even more. Brownie points for a testimonial hook!

🎥 Take a moment to outline the key steps before hitting record.
Keeping things structured will help you stay on track and avoid unnecessary rambling / scenes. Is it a voiceover or a testimonial? Think about the order of information - start with an engaging hook, clearly lay out the steps, and wrap up with a satisfying conclusion. Consider creating a rough script or bullet points to ensure you don’t forget any crucial details.
Pro tip: Write a shot list! This is a game-changer, especially when focusing on multiple USPs or product benefits (product shot? tick. texture closeup? tick. application? tick.)

📍 Keep it simple! Use clear, easy-to-understand language, break things down step by step, and SHOW instead of just telling.
The more visual, the better. And the perfect recipe? Your visuals should ALWAYS match the audio. Explaining ingredients? Show them! Perhaps mentioning the texture? Let’s see it. And don’t forget about the b-roll!
Viewers should be able to follow along without having to pause, as they most likely won’t be able to while watching your ad on social media.
Use close-ups or zoom in on important details when necessary. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for viewers to absorb the information, and hopefully click that “add to basket!”

📱 Make sure you got the size right before starting to record as this is crucial to how your content is going to look like at the end.
Each platform has different audience expectations, so tailor your content accordingly. Short-form platforms prioritise quick, engaging content, so get straight to the point. For longer formats, like YouTube, you can dive deeper, add personal insights, and provide a more detailed walkthrough.
However, if more formats are needed there are some tricks to make it work recording with only one device! Watch this.

💡 Why should viewers care? Show them how the product will make their life easier, better, or just more fun! People are more likely to watch and engage if they immediately see the value in what you're sharing.
Instead of just saying, “This is a great hack,” explain WHY it’s beneficial. Will it save time? Improve efficiency? Help them achieve something faster? Address common pain points that your audience might relate to, and position the product you advertise as the perfect solution.
When in doubt, go to the brief or product’s website (or communicate with the brand if unclear) and find those USPs (Unique Selling Points) - this will allow you to write a more punchy script, focused on what really matters!

This should be obvious at this point, but good lighting, crisp audio, and a steady shot can take your video from "meh" to "wow."
No fancy gear needed - just pay attention to the basics. Natural light is your best friend, but if that’s not an option, use a ring light or any soft lighting to avoid harsh shadows.
Clear audio is just as important as video quality - use a microphone if possible, or at least ensure you’re recording in a quiet environment, best filled with soft furnishings like carpet, pillows etc.
Avoid shaky footage by using a tripod, or simply propping up your phone against a steady surface. The goal is to create a polished and professional-looking video without breaking the bank.

The best part? A true secret to creating a killer how-to video is just being yourself, keeping it helpful, and having fun with it, while keeping professional quality!
