📷 ⚙️ Stop Filming Like This (It’s Ruining Your Quality)!

Easy camera habits & tricks that instantly upgrade your UGC

👀 This is one of those topics that makes people go: “wait… I didn’t know that.”

Because sometimes your UGC doesn’t look less professional because of lighting, editing, or the concept…

It’s actually your camera settings quietly working against you before you even start filming đźŽĄ And the good news? These are tiny fixes that instantly upgrade your content without changing your style at all.

Let’s break it down👇

🎥 1. Your Lens Choice Is Changing The Feel Of Your Content

This is where a lot of creators accidentally lose quality without realising it. On iPhone, each zoom level behaves differently, and using the wrong one for the wrong shot can instantly change how “professional” your UGC feels.

This is your vibe lens - it naturally makes content feel more dynamic and youthful. It’s great for:

  • walking shots

  • outdoor lifestyle clips

  • “day in the life” moments

  • adding energy and freshness

❌ But avoid it for:

  • close-up product detail shots (not a good look)

  • anything where clarity matters (reduced sharpness)

📱 1x - Your Default “Safe” Lens

This is your most reliable setting. Use it for:

  • product shots

  • talking to camera

  • unboxing moments

  • most UGC scenes

It gives you the most natural, true-to-life look - which is exactly what brands want for trust and clarity.

This is your “intentional detail” lens. It works really well for:

  • close-ups with depth

  • luxury-feeling product moments

  • pulling focus on a specific detail

  • more cinematic framing

It helps isolate the product and makes shots feel more deliberate.

❌ The BIG mistake: In-between Zoom

This is the one thing some creators don’t realise:

Zooming at 1.3x, 1.7x, 2.4x or anything in between feels fine while filming… but here’s the issue:

👉 your phone isn’t switching to a proper lens
👉 it’s digitally stretching the image
👉 which reduces overall quality

❌ Result:

Less crisp, less “premium” footage - even when everything else is perfect.

âś… Simple rule:

Always stick to full zoom steps only:

  • 0.5x

  • 1x

  • 2x / 3x

And if you want movement, use a slow physical zoom (click on and hold the 1x button and move it to the right) - but try to land on a full number at the end.

🧠 2. Lock Your Settings + Turn Off HDR

Your phone is trying to help… but not always in your favour

Have you played around with locking the focus and exposure?

Tap and hold your screen so lighting doesn’t shift mid-shot - this keeps everything consistent and clean. Especially helpful when shooting those tricky “opening cupboard / fridge POVs”!

Now onto something many creators overlook:

HDR automatically tries to balance bright and dark areas in your footage.

But in UGC, it often:

  • flattens contrast

  • removes depth from lighting

  • makes footage feel slightly “processed” instead of natural

❌ Avoid HDR for:

  • product shots

  • talking to camera

  • clean aesthetic UGC

âś… When it can help:

  • extremely high contrast lighting (sunsets, sunrises)

  • harsh sunlight + dark interiors

Otherwise, keeping it OFF usually gives you more control and a more natural, premium feel.

🔍 3. Watch Out for Macro Lens (The Tiny Tulip Icon 👀)

This one catches almost everyone at some point!

When you film close to a product, your iPhone may automatically switch into macro mode. You’ll see a small 🌷 tulip icon appear on screen.

And here’s the problem:

❌ What macro does:

  • switches lenses automatically

  • changes sharpness and colour

  • can make footage inconsistent between shots

This is especially noticeable in:

  • close-up product textures

  • unboxing details

  • hand-held product shots

âś… What to do instead:

When the tulip icon appears:
👉 tap it to turn macro OFF

Then physically move your phone closer or use 2x / 3x zoom button instead of letting it auto-switch.

This keeps your footage consistent, sharper, and more intentional!

 âś¨ The Big Takeaway

A lot of “why doesn’t my video look as good as I expected?” moments come down to this: not your idea, not your lighting, not your editing.

…but your camera making automatic decisions in the background.

Once you take control of these settings, your content instantly feels:

  • sharper

  • cleaner

  • more intentional

  • more professional
